A new study revealed that artificial intelligence interprets Polish more accurately than any other language, while English only ranked sixth. Researchers from the University of Maryland and Microsoft evaluated how well AI models handled identical prompts translated into 26 different languages.
The results overturned expectations. “English did not perform best,” the researchers wrote. “It placed sixth in long-text analysis, while Polish outperformed all others.” The team tested systems from OpenAI, Google Gemini, Qwen, Llama, and DeepSeek under identical conditions.
Machines Master Polish Despite Limited Data
Polish achieved an average accuracy score of 88%, confirming it as the most effective language for giving commands to AI. “Polish proves most precise for artificial intelligence,” stated the Polish Patent Office. “People find it difficult to learn, but AI seems to handle it easily.”
Surprisingly, AI models excelled in Polish even though far less data exists in that language compared with English or Chinese. Chinese, however, performed poorly, ranking fourth from the bottom in the overall assessment.
The Languages AI Understands Most Clearly
Researchers ranked the top-performing languages based on overall accuracy in AI comprehension:
| Rank | Language | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Polish | 88% |
| 2 | French | 87% |
| 3 | Italian | 86% |
| 4 | Spanish | 85% |
| 5 | Russian | 84% |
| 6 | English | 83.9% |
| 7 | Ukrainian | 83.5% |
| 8 | Portuguese | 82% |
| 9 | German | 81% |
| 10 | Dutch | 80% |
Researchers concluded that linguistic simplicity doesn’t always predict AI understanding. Despite its reputation as one of the hardest human languages, Polish has become the one AI understands best.
