Luxembourg to Begin Hosting Initial Vehicle Tests
Automotive group Stellantis has signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese autonomous mobility company Pony.ai to collaborate on producing electric vans capable of Level 4 autonomy for the European market. The first phase of the initiative will take place in Luxembourg, where testing is expected to start ahead of a larger rollout in 2026. The project brings together Stellantis’ electric vehicle engineering and Pony.ai’s advanced autonomous driving systems to accelerate Europe’s shift toward automated transportation.
Project Centers on Electric Commercial Vehicles
The partnership will see Pony.ai’s autonomous driving suite—including sensors, onboard computing, and control software—integrated into Stellantis’ electric light commercial vehicle lineup, featuring models from Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel. The vehicles are being developed for both passenger transport and goods delivery applications. Initial trials will involve safety operators monitoring performance as the technology undergoes evaluation and approval from European authorities.
Global Collaboration Aims to Expand Pony.ai’s Reach
For Pony.ai, the agreement represents a major step in entering the European market, complementing its established autonomous operations in China and the United States. Stellantis considers the partnership a crucial element of its broader effort to introduce automation into its expanding range of electric vehicles. Both firms emphasized that regulatory compliance, safety validation, and strong data protection practices will guide the program before it moves toward commercial deployment.
