Repeated Drone Sightings Halt Flights
Munich Airport is gradually reopening after two separate closures triggered by drones near its runways. The first shutdown occurred late Thursday night when air traffic controllers spotted drones, halting all departures and arrivals. Although flights resumed briefly Friday morning, new sightings later in the day prompted a second suspension, with several planes diverted to nearby airports such as Vienna and Stuttgart.
Travelers Face Overnight Stranding
The consecutive disruptions affected thousands of passengers, with more than 6,500 people impacted during the second incident alone. Many were forced to remain in the terminals overnight, where airport staff provided temporary sleeping arrangements, food, and beverages. While flight operations have now restarted, airlines warned that delays and cancellations may continue as schedules are readjusted.
Authorities Seek Solutions to Security Gaps
Officials have not yet determined who operated the drones or how many were involved. The incidents have heightened concerns about the vulnerability of critical transport infrastructure. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said new measures will be fast-tracked to strengthen counter-drone defenses, including the potential deployment of military resources to protect airports and other key facilities.
