A major UK study has found that different antidepressants can produce strikingly different side effects, including weight changes, heart rate fluctuations, and variations in blood pressure. Researchers from King’s College London and the University of Oxford analysed data from 151 clinical trials involving more than 58,000 people taking 30 types of antidepressants. They discovered that some medications could cause up to 2kg of weight gain within two months, while others were linked to similar levels of weight loss. For example, patients on maprotiline gained about 2kg on average, while those taking agomelatine lost around 2.5kg. Nearly half of patients on…
Pizza Hut’s UK franchise operator, DC London Pie, has entered administration, leading to the closure of 68 restaurants across the country — from Finchley Lido in London to Carlisle and Rhyl — as well as 11 delivery-only sites. The move puts around 1,210 jobs at risk. The restructuring follows the appointment of administrators from FTI Consulting, after which Pizza Hut’s parent company, Yum! Brands — which also owns KFC and Taco Bell — stepped in to buy the UK restaurant operations in a pre-pack administration deal. The deal secures 64 Pizza Hut sites and preserves 1,276 jobs, with those restaurants…
Millions of young people could miss out on effective treatments because so few take part in medical research, experts warn. Data from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) shows that 18- to 24-year-olds make up 8% of England’s population but only 4.4% of research participants, meaning new treatments are often tested mainly on older adults. “This can lead to medicines that aren’t safe or appropriate for younger people,” said Kirsty Blenkins of the Association for Young People’s Health, citing barriers such as low awareness, poor recruitment, and privacy concerns. Dr Esther Mukuka, NIHR’s director for research inclusion,…
JPMorgan Chase reported a strong quarterly profit as the U.S. economy shows resilience. The bank posted a 12% increase in profits, reaching $14.39 billion. The rise was largely fueled by higher trading revenues and continued consumer spending. This performance highlights the bank’s ability to adapt amid a complex economic environment. Analysts noted that JPMorgan’s results reflect both the strength of the U.S. economy and the bank’s operational efficiency. Trading activity was a major contributor to the growth. Investors remain active in the market, and JPMorgan’s trading desks benefited from increased volatility in bonds and equities. The bank’s trading revenue rose…
A new “smart” cancer injection has shown remarkable success in shrinking head and neck tumours within just six weeks, offering hope for patients with advanced or recurrent disease. The drug, amivantamab, works through a triple-action mechanism and is administered as a simple subcutaneous injection rather than lengthy intravenous infusions. Results from the Orig-AMI 4 trial, presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology conference in Berlin, have been described by experts as “incredibly encouraging.” The international study involved 86 patients with recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) who had already undergone chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Of these,…
Paramount Skydance will lay off about 2,000 employees in the US starting the week of 27 October as part of a $2bn cost-cutting plan under new CEO David Ellison, Variety reported on Saturday. The layoffs come two months after Skydance Media completed its $8.4bn merger with Paramount Global in August. Additional job cuts are expected internationally, with full details to be revealed in the company’s third-quarter earnings report on 10 November. Variety previously reported that between 2,000 and 3,000 positions could be eliminated by early November. As of December 2024, Paramount employed nearly 18,600 full- and part-time workers, along with…
A long-acting injection that prevents HIV is set to be approved for use in England and Wales, offering a major alternative to the daily pills currently used for protection against the virus. The treatment, called cabotegravir (CAB-LA), is a form of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and is administered once every two months. It is designed for people at risk of HIV who cannot take oral PrEP for medical or practical reasons. In draft guidance released on Friday, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended the injection for adults and young people at risk. It is already available on…
Nestlé will cut 16,000 jobs worldwide over the next two years — about 6% of its global workforce — as part of a major restructuring plan aimed at boosting growth and cutting costs. The layoffs include 12,000 office roles and 4,000 in manufacturing and supply chains. “The world is changing and Nestlé needs to change faster,” said new CEO Philipp Navratil, who took over after the dismissal of Laurent Freixe last month. The company aims to save 3 billion Swiss francs (£2.8 billion) by 2027, up from its previous goal of 2.5 billion francs. Nestlé, which owns brands such as…
Rhizanthella is one of nature’s most remarkable orchids — a plant that spends its entire life hidden beneath the soil. Lacking leaves and relying entirely on a symbiotic fungus for survival, it draws nutrients from the fungus, which in turn connects to the roots of the broom bush (Melaleuca uncinata) to access food from the surrounding soil. First discovered in 1928 by a farmer ploughing his field in Western Australia, Rhizanthella immediately captured global scientific attention. Nearly a century later, it remains exceptionally elusive. Finding one involves locating the right habitat and carefully brushing away soil to uncover its underground…
